A Beltwide Seed Quality Survey; An Extension Cotton Specialists Project

The total percentage varies by operation and location, but seed costs represents a big portion of the total cotton production cost. With seed prices continuing to increase, growers from across the US Cotton Belt have raised concerns regarding the quality of seed that is commercially available. Because of this, a seed quality survey experiment was conducted in 2020; it includes 15 locations and field, as well as a laboratory component. The objective of this project is to broadly assess quality and improve the overall understanding of seed quality for the entire industry. Environmental conditions and field level data including stand counts at 7 and 10 days after planting, seedling fresh weight, and maturity metrics were collected in season. Yield and fiber quality data available at the time will be presented for select locations. In this presentation, the field component of this survey will be discussed.
