Texas is the largest producer of organic cotton in the US. Most of that production is concentrated in the High Plains region of the state. Organic cotton producers have been innovative in their approaches to overcome many of the challenges associated with this production strategy. A project was initiated at Texas A&M University that would help to develop cotton varieties well-suited for organic production in terms of insect control, drought tolerance, and nitrogen use efficiency.
