In 2010, 12 different locations in the Southeast, Mid-South, and Southwest were set up to evaluate MON 63410 (newly encapsulated acetochlor formulation) for crop safety and weed control in cotton. The trade name for Mon 63410 in 2011 will be Warrant. The objective of this research was to verify our initial findings for optimal application timing and to learn more about the residual capabilities on grasses and small seeded broadleaves, especially amaranthus species, of this new acetochlor formulation that initially showed good crop safety in cotton greenhouse trials. Another objective was to determine the best fit for this product in an overall weed control program that manages for resistance. Five different herbicide systems that are consistent with Herbicide Resistance Action Committee HRAC recommendations for using more residuals with multiple modes of action were evaluated for overall weed control and crop safety including yields. With the introduction of Warrant, the cotton industry will now have another viable, economical option for over-the-top, in-crop applications that provide residual control of grasses and small seeded broadleaves, while adding another mode of action into the program.
