Agricultural best management practices are often viewed by society as measures necessary to be taken by producers to protect the environment, sustain the land, and ensure an adequate supply of safe, nutritious food for human consumption. However, to be effective in accomplishing these goals and to allow the agricultural community to remain productive and profitable while striving for sustainability and environmental health, the development of BMPs must adhere to certain scientific principles. This presentation will help define these principles as they apply to fertilizer BMPs for cotton production in the South and to promote the foundation of fertilizer BMPs for any crop, which is to apply the right source at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place.
