USDA-ARS and Cotton Incorporated Lygus and Stink Bug Workshop: Management, Control, and Insecticide Resistance
In the light of boll weevil eradication and wide scale adoption of Bollgard cotton, the importance of the sucking bug complex has increased throughout the U.S. cotton belt. In the southeastern U.S., stink bugs contribute to significant yield losses annually. In the mid-southern states, yield reductions and control costs associated with the tarnished plant bug have increased in recent years. Similarly, the importance of the western tarnished plant bug has increased in the western cotton belt. The following workshop has been designed to address key issues surrounding this pest complex. Formal presentations will be made on three broad areas (1) sampling and thresholds, (2) area-wide control, and (3) chemical control and resistance. Ample time will be included at the end of each section for discussion about the importance of these pests, future research directions, and critical issues.
