Preliminary Results for Seeding Rate Studies in Cotton in South Alabama

Dalton E Barber , Auburn University
We established seeding rate studies at two Auburn University research sites near Brewton and Headland, AL. Varieties included DP 2055 B3XF and PHY 400 W3FE. Intended seeding rates were 3.0, 2.4, 2.0, 1.7, 1.5, 1.2, and 1.0 seed/ft; or expressed differently, seed spaced 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, or 12 inches apart. Plots were planted in 36-inch rows, with populations ranging from 43,560 to 14,520 seed/A. Treatments were imposed by planter adjustments, though at Brewton the lowest populations were established by hand thinning. Data collection includes plant growth characteristics, yield, and fiber quality.
