As cotton analysts, we must look beyond our boundaries, geographic and conceptual. China's cotton sector, and the sector's interaction and evolution with world cotton markets is complex, uncertain, and ever changing. The past holds some answers for where the future is going for these relationships, but in an age of growing uncertainty particularly clear thinking is needed to look forward with any hope of success. China's impact on world prices is ever-present, and as China's economy and society continues its constant change, importers of clothing and exporters of cotton have to be aware of the intersection of demographics, technology, and policy and how it will affect their interaction with the Chinese market.
