Patenting Versus Open Source - Equipment Manufacturer Perspective

The panel will discuss the merits of using open source rather that patents when developing new technologies for the industry.  What are the pros and cons of each of these methods when developing and transferring technology or is there a hybrid that can garner the benefits of each?
