A critical concern in breeding for target spot (Corynespora cassiicola) resistance in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is obtaining the ability to identify response to the fungus on plant tissues in a timely, effective, and repeatable manner. To fulfill these requirements, our proposed project develops a protocol that screens for target spot at the seedling stage within a controlled greenhouse environment. This protocol will allow for evaluation of large quantities of genotypes in a short amount of time and a modest amount of space. It will permit early identification of tolerant and/or resistant varieties. Once resistance have been identified, Auburn University and other southern state breeding programs can begin breeding for a resistant variety.
