Introduction
China is the world largest cotton importer and consumer, and the second largest producer. Its domestic cotton demand and supply have a significant impact on the world market. Traditionally, cotton production in China was concentrated in the six provinces in the central and northern plains. In the past decade, cotton production in XinJiang province grew quickly, and became the largest cotton producer in China.
Xinjiang, locates in northwest China, is the largest province in the country, which accounts for one-sixth of China's landmass. It has a population of 23.6 million in 2015. Climate is very dry , a lot of sunshine and big difference between temperature in day and night ,which is suitable for production of high-quality cotton.
The cotton industry is very important to the economic development in Xinjiang. In 2015, Xinjiang’s cotton production accounted for 62.6% of China’s total cotton production. From 2005 to 2015, the cotton yield, total output, and quality measurement all ranked No.1 in the country.
Objectives
The objectives of this study are: (1) to evaluate the comparative advantage of Xinjiang cotton production from 2005 to 2015; and (2) to analysis the impact of Xinjiang cotton production to China cotton market.
Data and Methods
The China Statistics Yearbook and Xinjiang Statistics Yearbook are used to collect the data for the study, which include cotton yield, planted acres, production, harvest acres, and etc. in Xinjiang in 2005-2015.
This study will quantify the comparative advantage of Xinjiang cotton production by using three different indices: Efficiency Advantage Indices (EAI), Scale Advantage Indices (SAI), and Aggregate Advantage Indices (AAI).
Expected Results
This study will reveal the changes in efficiency, scale and integrated advantages in Xinjiang, which will help to understand the performance and advantages of cotton and policy-makers to further improve the competitiveness for the cotton production.
