Texas A&M University developed a true distance graduate degree program in plant breeding in an effort to meet the challenges associated with the growth in human population and demand for improved production of food, feed, fiber, greenspace, bioenergy, and shelter. The program offers students around the world with the opportunity to maintain their current jobs and lifestyles while pursuing an advanced plant breeding degree. The degree program requires that participating students have access to agriculture research and plant breeding facilities and requires a PhD scientist at or near their location who is eligible to become a member of the graduate faculty at Texas A&M and serve as a co-chair and mentor of their plant breeding thesis or dissertation research. All classes and interactions are handled through distance technologies although the student has the option of spending some time on campus. The program requirements, costs, and selected participants are discussed.
