Abstract: Innovations in polymer synthesis and fiber processing have been critical for producing high strength fibers. These fibers have excellent mechanical properties suitable for manufacture of composite materials. Increasing strength of reinforcing fibers provides lighter products. A summary of high strength fibers currently produced, ongoing efforts and techniques to improve the strength further is presented in this paper. The focus is on the techniques of introduction of nanostructures, improving the structure, and reducing the defects to obtain finer and stronger carbon fibers.
