By the year 2050 world population is expected to reach 9 billion, a 50% increase from 2000 and triple over the past hundred years. Many scientist believe at 9 billion we will be reaching a point at which our ability to sustain ourselves and our natural resource base will be put to the test. Thus, sustainability is not a concept that can be expected to be in vogue today and passé tomorrow. All industries must continue to find ways to utilize our natural resources more efficiently, effectively, productively and sustainably in order to provide for today’s needs and protect for those of future generations. The cotton industry is no exception. This presentation will provide insights into the latest sustainability data on cotton and its impact on land, water, energy and green house gases, dispelling myths about this fiber that has sustained life on earth for more than 5000 years and discussing its relevance to the nonwovens industry.
