Problems arise when we compare the development of cotton ovule trichomes with Arabidopsis leaf trichomes.  A better comparison would be Arabidopsis leaves with cotton leaves.  Cotton (family Malvales) and Arabidopsis (family Brassicales) are closely related and in numerous reports have been placed on the same Eurosid II clade.  This could indicate that a similar mechanism for trichome initiation is being used in the cotton leaves.  We will discuss research with crossing of pilose X fiberless lines and attempts to produce some cotton transcription factors in prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
