Cotton gin byproducts were processed and blended to make six distinct substrate treatments for use in the manufacture of 100% biodegradable packaging material and insulation panels. The packaging and insulation materials were evaluated in accordance with the following ASTM standards: C177 - thermal conductivity; C165 - compressive strength; C203 - flexural strength; and C1134 - water retention after partial immersion, compared to current synthetic plastics and foams currently used in commercial packaging materials and insulation boards. This presentation will report on the results of the testing and show the type of products that can be produced with cotton gin byproducts utilizing a novel ecologically conscious manufacturing process developed by Ecovative Design.
