8868 Strategies for Dealing with the High Cost of Fertilizers for Cotton

Soaring costs for fertilizers, especially N, have all cotton producers looking for ways to cut costs.  Producers in Alabama and some other southern states do have proven alternatives.   Stategies include soil testing to identify fields where P and K are NOT needed, using winter legumes as the only source of N, using poultry broiler litter where it is available, and using less expensive sources of N fertilizers.  Research involving all these stategies will be reviewed.
