Photo-micrographs are analyzed in an effort to better understand the mechanisms of attachment between cotton fibers and foreign-matter particles of different types and sizes. Both hairy-leaf and smooth-leaf varieties are considered, and the samples analyzed are machine-picked and machine ginned through seed-cotton cleaners and gin stand, but with no lint cleaning. The aim is to shed light on the issue of how better to remove foreign matter from cotton lint while minimizing fiber damage.
