Quality Score (QS): Breeder Selection Tool

Don C. Jones and Ed M. Barnes. Cotton Incorporated, 6399 Weston Parkway, Cary, NC 27513

A fiber quality score (QS) was developed to allow comparison of breeding materials in an easy, straightforward manner. QS can be calculated using HVI properties upper half mean length (UHM), micronaire (Mic), uniformity index (UI), strength, short fiber index, and elongation, or combinations of all or some of these.  Calculation of the QS is based on transformation of the data and then weights are assigned to each property.  The scale of the QS is 0 to 100 with 0 representing the lowest quality and 100 representing the highest quality.  Fiber used in this study was also spun to allow for comparison of QS with actual spinning performance.
