Irrigation Timing and Tarnished Plant Bug Management – Making Decisions using COTMAN in 2007

Research to validate crop management guides for timing furrow irrigation and for control of  tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois)) continued in Arkansas in 2007. This presentation will highlight research results from a field trial conducted at Marianna in Central Eastern Arkansas.  Results from the previous research indicate that the insect control termination guide in COTMAN that has been in use for heliothine caterpillars and boll weevils (NAWF=5 +350 DD60s) is more than sufficient for late season plant bug management, and timing of final furrow irrigation also may be appropriate at this same crop stage. These decision guides were validated in 2007 trials in high yielding cotton and cotton  that had been subjected to pre-flower infestations of plant bugs as well as water deficit stress. Final irrigation timing effects on plant bug infestations also will be discussed.
