MON 89034 Corn - Implications for Bollworm Populations in Cotton and Potential Impacts on the Corn/Cotton IRM System

Walt Mullins, Monsanto, 3175 Lenox Park Blvd., Suite 110, Memphis, TN 38115

Monsanto Company has developed, through the use of recombinant DNA techniques, MON 89034, a corn product that is protected from damage caused by larval feeding of a number of corn borer species, as well as Spodoptera spp. (fall armyworm; FAW), and Helicoverpa zea (corn earworm/bollworm).  MON 89034 produces the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-derived proteins Cry1A.105 and Cry2Ab2, which are active against a broad spectrum of lepidopteran insects.  Given the nature of these dual effective dose Bt proteins in MON 89034 and the high level of control of bollworm expected, utilization of corn products containing MON 89034 should impact the population dynamics and IRM of bollworm in the corn/cotton system in the cotton belt where both crops are grown.  These issues will be discussed.
