Comparison of Tarnished Plant Bug Injury to Five Varieties of Cotton in the Mississippi Delta

James Robbins, Delta Research and Extension Center, Mississippi State University, MAFES, Stoneville, MS, p.o. Box 197, Stoneville, MS 38776

Field trials were conducted in 2005, 2006, and 2007 to determine tarnished plant bug and thrips impact on five cotton varieties. Varieties included conventional, Bollguard, Roundup Ready, and stacked gene varieties. Insect counts were made throughout the season and yields were taken. In 2006 highest yields were from treated fields of DP 424 BGII/RR. The lowest yields were observed in non-treated fields of DP555 BG/RR and DP 5415 RR. The greatest yield difference was from DP 555 BG/RRreated fields compared to DP 555 BG/RR non-treated. The least yield difference between treated and non-treated fields was from tests of DP 451 B/RR. These data suggest possible greater sensitivity to plant bug injury in some cotton varieties tested than from others.
