The antibiotic resistant marker gene (nptII) encoding the enzyme neomycin phosphotransferase II (NPTII), has frequently been used as a selectable marker during the transformation and selection of a wide range of genetically modified plants. We describe the performance characteristics of the first immunochromatographic strip for the rapid, on-site detection of NPTII in transgenic plants, using monoclonal antibodies developed at Agdia®. The NPTII ImmunoStrip® uses a simple extraction procedure to reliably determine the presence or absence of the NPTII protein in leaf and seed of commercially available cotton varieties.
