Agronomic Evaluation of Eight Elite Pima Lines Possessing Superior Fiber Quality

Richard G. Percy1, Mauricio Ulloa1, and Jinfa Zhang2. (1) USDA-ARS, 21881 N. Cardon Lane, Maricopa, AZ 85239, (2) Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, New Mexico State University, MSC 3Q, Las Cruces, NM 88003

Eight lines were evaluated for potential public release.  These lines, derived from a cross of a Sea Island cultivar with a high fiber strength American Pima line, possess exceptional fiber length and strength.  In 2005 and 2006 the eight lines were evaluated along with two commercial checks and two fiber quality checks , at Las Cruces, NM, Maricopa, AZ, Westside, CA, and Shafter, CA.  Evaluation included such agronomic traits as yield, plant height, and lint percent, as well as fiber properties.  One or more of the eight lines appear suitable for public release.
