Cotton Variety Performance in a Double-Cropped Planting Following Wheat

Robert E. Ferguson, A. M. Stewart, David Y. Lanclos, Brad M. Guillory, and Brandi W. Woolam. LSU AgCenter, 8105 Tom Bowman Drive, Alexandria, LA 71302

Wheat acres in Louisiana have increased due to higher wheat prices and with this increase producers are looking at double-cropping cotton after wheat.  With the advent of transgenic Bt cotton and boll weevil eradication cotton can be double-cropped following wheat.

A field study was conducted in 2007 at the Dean Lee Research and Extension Center in Alexandria, LA to evaluate cotton varieties planted behind wheat.  Ten cotton varieties were planted on May 23, 2007 after the wheat was harvested in wheat stubble and a stale seed bed.  Five Roundup Ready and five Roundup Ready Flex varieties were evaluated in this experiment ranging from short to full season.

Growth habits of each variety have been collected throughout the growing season.  Yield, stand counts and plant heights of each variety will be reported.
