Research on module tarps has focused on UV exposure and outdoor weathering in the past few years.  Rainfall and water ponding penetration was the indicator of performance.  Testing has shifted toward performance in wind and effectiveness of tarp coverage in high wind events.  Winds experienced on the High Plains of Texas and in the Gulf area place large stresses on tarps, at times causing tearing and even shredding of tarps.  Testing on module tarp samples was conducted in a 6 foot by 6 foot wind tunnel with winds starting at 35 mph and increasing.  Performance indicators are visual observations, bucket test and ponding test results, and wind run length/time to observed pinhole formation.  Results from preliminary testing will be shared at the Beltwide in Nashville.  The results of testing will aid the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in developing a module tarp performance standard.
