Cotton Record Keeping Seminar: Laying the Groundwork to Finding Your True Cost of Production
Cotton Incorporated is funding research to develop a new system that will provide growers a one-stop shop for all their field history and business accounting needs. Farmers by nature are independent and their record keeping systems have developed in a way that allows no standardization. The system that Cotton Incorporated is funding is a standardized system will allow growers to determine their true cost of production and allow for comparisons and benchmarking across regions, farms, and counties. The software we are working on is a software package that allows growers to make informed management decisions. This program is modular in nature and has mapping, accounting, field records and harvest records all in one system. There will also be capability to interface information with gins, a truly unique aspect of record keeping. Also, the program allows you to ask what you would like to compare, then the software does the math for you. Also, different reports are accessible. Say, for example, that a grower is visited by an EPA auditor and needs a Pesticide Use Report. All the grower has to do is select pesticide use report in the program and have it printed out. Crop insurance can be handled in the same way. Once a grower's information is entered in the system, it is just a matter of selecting how it should be reported. The program's mapping capability makes it a perfect fit for growers who are integrating precision agriculture into their operations.
