Creating Market Demand For Biologically Based Growing Systems in Cotton

Marcia Gibbs, Sustainable Cotton Project of Community Alliance with Family Farmers, P.O. Box 363, Davis, CA 95617

Environmental concerns are driving cotton production issues in California. SCP, cotton producers, field consultants, and UCCE are taking the lead in moving production toward more biologically intensive practices. These incorporate intensive weekly monitoring, lacewings releases, intercropping alfalfa or other predator habitats, and reduced risk insecticides. UCCE is a partner providing research, technical and outreach support. These practices are called BASIC (Biological Agriculture Systems in Cotton, www.sustainablecotton.org) and have resulted in reduced pesticide use compared to county averages, especially higher risk chemicals. SCP is securing markets and a premium for this cotton in the textile and apparel industries.
