Influence of Fiber Breakage in the AFIS Opener Upon AFIS Short Fiber Measurement

Substantial fiber breakage occurs in the high-speed opening roll of the AFIS. Variations in sliver preparation and performance of the opener result in variations in the amount and nature of this breakage. The amount of broken fiber, in turn, affects the accuracy and precision of some AFIS measurements, notably Length and Short Fiber Content. These relationships are explored theoretically and experimentally.
