Obsolete race stocks and other wild cottons are being screened for thrips resistance as seedlings. Thrips are reared in wheat, then forced to move to the test cottons when the wheat is killed with herbicide. Initial screening is a large version of the classic “tray test,” and eliminates accessions that are not resistant. Accessions that show resistance in this testing are then tested in a caged no-choice test to isolate the mechanism of resistance. To date, over 200 accessions have been screened and several have shown moderate resistance. One accession has shown strong resistance. These cottons will be submitted to the genetic cooperator for development of lines that can be easily crossed to adapted cultivars.
