Advances in Managing Late-season Honeydew-producing Insects in Acala and Pima Cotton in the San Joaquin Valley

Larry D. Godfrey and Treanna Pierce. University of California, 73 Briggs Hall, 1 Shields Avenue, Davis, CA 95616

Late-season insects have been problematic in SJV cotton for the last 5 years. These pests, cotton aphid and silverleaf whitefly, can reduce cotton quality by depositing honeydew on the exposed lint. Research was conducted and delivered to growers on management, sampling, and appropriate thresholds for Acala cotton from 2002 to 2004. With the increased incidence of Pima cotton in the SJV, there was a need for management information on late-season insects on this cotton species. Studies were initiated in 2005 and continued in 2006.
