Criteria for adoption of variable rate N fertilization will be discussed. Research summarizing soil testing, tissue testing, topography, remote sensing, and soil spatial variability will be addressed and discussed in relation to decision support for variable N fertilization. In-field research and demonstrations of variable rate N fertilization will be presented. Potential growth, yield, and environmental benefits will be addressed.
