Evaluation of Ignite 280 SL (Glufosinate) as a Cotton Defoliant

Due to higher input cost and low cotton prices, ways to reduce chemical costs need to be found for growers. One area that growers can reduce chemical cost is in the selection of defoliants used for defoliating cotton. Before glyphosate resistant cotton, conventional cotton was defoliated with Roundup (a non-selective herbicide) along with other defoliants as a harvest aid. Now Roundup as a defoliant is not applicable with the introduction of glyphosate resistance cotton. With glyphosate resistant cotton being widely accepted by growers, other non-selective herbicides such as Ignite 280 SL (glufosinate) needs to be evaluated as a defoliant. Glufosinate can be applied up to 30 oz/ac in a single application for complete broad spectrum weed control in glufosinate resistant cotton. A study was conducted at Rocky Mount, NC in September 27, 2006 using varying rates of glufosinate mixed with Prep 6 (ethephon) and was compared back to standards, and a untreated control. The standards were Def 6 (phosphoro-trithioate) @ 6 oz/ac + Dropp SC (thidazuron) @ 3.2 oz/ac + Prep 6 @ 24 oz/ac and Def 6 @ 6 oz/ac + Prep 6 @ 24 oz/ac. Rates of glufosinate were 0, 7.5, 15, 22.5, and 30 oz/ac, along with Prep 6 @ 24 oz/ac. Visual ratings were taken 4, 7, 14, and 21 days for percent desiccation and defoliation after treatments were applied. Also percent terminal and basal regrowth were taken 14 and 21 days after application.
