Due to the rising price of fossil fuels, alternative fuel sources are being explored at an ever increasing rate. One source of fuel currently being explored extensively is that of biomass left over from harvesting, handling, and/or manufacturing processes. One such biomass source is the waste stream from cotton gins, more commonly known as gin waste or gin trash. This paper reports on using the precleaning equipment in a cotton gin to "clean" gin waste for various potential uses. One such use is for a fuel in a commercial boiler used to supply heat to greenhouses, nurseries, and/or broiler houses. Approximately seven tons of gin waste was pelleted and burned in a commercial boiler. The results of the burn tests are reported along with comparison data from corn and wood pellets burned in the same boiler.
