Evaluating Fabric Fuzziness by Laser Range Sensing

Bugao Xu and Ming Yao. The University of Texas at Austin, 1 University Station Stop A2700, Austin, TX 78712

In this research, we constructed and validated an evaluation system for automatic grading of fabric fuzziness. This system consists of a leaser range sensor, 2D mechanical stage, computer and fuzziness evaluation software. This paper presents the digitalization of a fabric surface for 3D surface modeling, image processing techniques for extracting surface profiles, fuzziness characterization, and the result of the trial experiments. The study demonstrated that the customized fuzziness evaluation system has the capacity to discriminate fabric fuzziness from zero to severe levels.
