Variety Performance in Fields Infested with Verticillium dahliae in the High Plains of Texas

Terry A. Wheeler, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, 1102 East FM 1294, Lubbock, TX 79403

Small plot variety tests were conducted in five fields infested with Verticillium dahliae. Each site contained between 32 and 36 varieties. Varieties tested included conventional and transgenic (Roundup Ready, Bollgard I and II, Widestrike, Liberty Link, and Roundup Flex) varieties. Incidence of wilt was measured at the sites during August and yield was measured at four of the five sites. Wilt for each site was expressed as relative wilt (RW) between 0 and 1, where 1 was the average wilt for the variety expressing the highest incidence of wilt at each site. Yield was also expressed as relative yield (RY) on a 0 to 1 scale at each site, where 1 was the highest average yield for that site. These relative wilt and yield values were combined as ((1 - RW) + RY) to provide an index of best and poorest performing varieties in Verticillium wilt fields.
