Development of Mutant Okra-leaf Cotton Varieties for the Texas South Plains

Efrem Bechere and Dick Auld. Texas Tech University, Box 42122, Lubbock, TX 79409-2122

Okra-leaf type varieties have open canopy which result in more light penetration. They have been shown to have resistance to silver leaf whitefly, sweet potato whitefly, cotton pink bollworms, boll weevil and mites. This trait also increased earliness and better insecticide reach to the lower portion of the plant. Okra-leaf varieties developed from the commercial variety Rocket through chemical mutagenesis were tested at Lubbock, Texas from 2003 to 2005. Eight mutant lines were identified to have better or competitive yield and better fiber quality than the original line, Rocket and the check variety FiberMax 958. These lines could have potential in the short growing season and dry land environment of the Texas South Plains.
