Yield Variability in Conventional and Conservation Tillage

Philip J. Bauer1, James R. Frederick2, Jeff M. Novak1, Warren J. Busscher1, and Sue Griggs2. (1) USDA-ARS, 2611 West Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501, (2) Clemson University, 2200 Pocket Road, Florence, SC 29505

In 1998, a fourteen acre field containing 7 different soils was divided roughly in half, with half of the field managed with innovative practices including conservation tillage and half managed with conventional methods. Corn was grown in 1999, 2001, and 2003. Cotton was grown in 2000, 2002, and 2004. Crops were harvested with machines equipped with yield monitors. Soils differed in yield for both crops, but soil ranking was dependent on crop grown and tillage method used. Fiber length, strength, micronaire, and length uniformity were not greatly influenced by soil type.
