Although Bollgard II lines appeared to show greater bollworm efficacy than either Bollgard or Widestrike varieties in both small plots and under limited grower experience, yield and quality contributions of various “new” Bt cottons may well outweigh small differences in technology performance against bollworms. Additionally, results of Official Variety Tests in North Carolina suggest that breeding efforts by major seed companies are quickly rendering varieties with lower technology costs, such as conventional varieties and herbicide-tolerant-only varieties, obsolete.
