Evaluation of Contact Herbicides as a Follow-up Treatment for Cotton Defoliation

Kelly M. Young, Patrick A. Clay, and Erin L. Taylor. University of Arizona, 4341 E. Broadway Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85040

The use of contact herbicides as a follow-up treatment for cotton defoliation was evaluated from 2002 to 2005 at the University of Arizona Maricopa Agriculture Center. An initial application of thidiazuron plus diuron (Ginstar) at 8 oz/A was followed seven to ten days later by an application of one of the following contact herbicides combined with crop oil at 1% v/v: fluthiacet-methyl (Blizzard) at 0.5oz/acre, flumiclorac (Resource) at 8 oz/acre, pyraflufen (ET) at 1.5 oz/acre, carfentrazone (Aim) at 1.0 oz/acre or paraquat (Gramoxone Max) at 17 oz/acre plus a non-ionic surfactant at 0.25% v/v. Defoliation, dessication levels, lint yield, color, leaf grade, micronaire, fiber length, staple, strength and uniformity were compared from these samples to cotton defoliated with a one time application of Ginstar at 8 oz/acre.
