Summary of 2001 Through 2004 Leading Variety Studies from a Fiber Noncellulosic Content and Yarn Spinning Performance Prospective

Donald E. Brushwood, USDA-ARS-CQRS, P.O. Box 792, Clemson, SC 29633

Leading Variety raw cottons originating from Texas, Georgia, and Mississippi, representing four successive seasons were processed into ring, open-end, and Vortex yarns. Raw fiber noncellulosic contents for each variety and location were determined. The varying levels of extractable materials and naturally occuring metals found were subsequently compared to corresponding fiber and yarn physical properties and yarn spinning performance data to determine the impact they may have on spinning efficiency and finished yarn properties.
