The Piercing/Sucking Bug Complex in SC

Dan Robinson, Mike Sullivan, and Sam Turnipseed. Clemson University, Edisto Research & Education Center, 64 Research Rd., Blackville, SC 29817

The piercing/sucking bug complex in SC cotton consists of stink bugs, lygus bugs, cotton fleahoppers and red mirids. All of these can damage small bolls. The current threshold on boll damage is 20%. Insecticide treatments are initiated when this threshold is reached. In cotton in SC, pyrethroids are the chemical of choice for piercing/sucking bug control; some organophosphates are used. Large plots were established where three treatment levels were used: 1) weekly treatments beginning at bloom(total of 4-6 applications), 2) treatment based on the 20% damage level(1-3 applications), and 3) untreated. Data will be presented on efficacy of chemicals and percent damage/yields from different treatment levels.
