R. D. Bagwell and J. Sharp. LSU Agcenter, 212A Macon Ridge Rd., Winnsboro, LA 71295
The impact of pre-bloom insect pests on cotton maturity and yield was evaluated in a replicated large block evaluation. Treatments evaluated were 1) untreated, 2) treatments based on LSU AgCenter recommendations and 3) weekly scheduled applications for aphids and tarnished plant bugs. Insect pests identified in treatments were cotton aphids, tarnished plant bugs and stink bugs. Cotton aphids were the only insect pest to reach recommended treatment threshold. Insecticide applications made to each treatment were 1) untreated no applications, 2) as needed one application, Trimax 0.047 lbs(AI)/acre, and 3) scheduled, three applications of Trimax at 0.047 lbs(AI)/acre. No significant differences were observed between treatment square retention at first bloom and the date of nodes above white flower = 5 (a measure of crop maturity).
