Fibrograms of HVI sample beards were downloaded and anlyzed for application of the classical theories by K. Hertel to conclude that a direct application of the theories without a modification appears extremely difficult based on the optical method imbedded in the current HVI length measurement principles. Efforts have been made to correct the shortcomings based on geometrical and probabilistic methods. A new direction for a better approximation will also be discussed.
