High interest in farm access to the Internet and information services has been shown by recent articles in the popular press. This paper will review the current state-of-the-art of wireless technology for providing access to the Internet and for bidirectional high speed movement of information in the farm environment. Scientists of the USDA-ARS-Genetics and Precision Agriculture Research Unit have set up two high speed wireless local area networks on farms in Noxubee and Bolivar Counties, Mississippi. Their experiences with these networks will be reviewed. Additionally, other current wireless technologies will be reviewed, including EV-DO, WIMAX, and 3G Wireless. Finally, prospects for future high speed wireless technologies will be reviewed.
