Measuring localized movement of Lygus hesperus into San Joaquin Valley cotton fields

P.B. Goodell and B. Ribeiro. Cooperative Extension - Univ Calif, 9240 So Riverbend, Kearney Ag Center, Parlier, CA 93648

Lygus hesperus populations were monitored in natural vegetation and cotton (Acala upland and Pima) in western Fresno County in June and July 2005. Weekly population densities of Lygus were mapped using ArcView 8 and analyzed. Tarweed (Hemizonia kelloggii) was a major source for insects throughout this period until the plants became unsuitable as a host. Other surrounding fields provided sources for Lygus, especially weedy orchard middles and field crops. Application of spatial analytical approaches will be discussed.
