Benefits of Winter Weed Management With VALOR® SX Herbicide

Jimmy Etheridge, Billy Corbin, Charles Henderson, and Ronnie Jones. Valent USA Corporation, P. O. Box 5008, Greenville, MS 38704

Two chemical treatments were applied at Valent's Mid-South Agricultural Research Center in Greenville, MS (1) flumioxazin plus glyphosate (.063 + .50 lb ai/A) applied in the fall and (2) glyphosate (1.0 lb ai/A) applied 2-3 weeks prior to planting in the spring. The treatments were applied in the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 crop seasons. Cotton was planted into each chemical treatment in mid-April of each year. Maintenance herbicides were used as needed to keep plots weed free after planting.

Soil temperature at planting, available soil nitrogen, crop height and crop dry weight data were collected from each treatment.

The data from both years demonstrated that the benefits of controlling winter vegetation with Valor® SX herbicide were (1) a higher soil temperature at planting, (2)increased available soil nitrogen,(3)increased dry weights and (4)increased plant heights compared to the spring application of glyphosate where weeds were present all winter.
