Density and Dispersal of Stink Bugs within and between Southeastern Farmscapes

P. Glynn Tillman, USDA/ARS, P.O. Box 748, Tifton, GA 31793

Density and dispersal of stink bugs were determine in typical Southeastern farmscapes including corn-cotton, corn-peanut, and peanut-cotton farmscapes. Corn and peanut fields were sources of stink bugs in adjacent cotton fields. Data on developmental stages of stink bugs present in cotton over time indicated that stink bugs could disperse into pre-boll cotton and lay eggs. Stink bugs dispersed first into the edges of cotton fields. Highest density and boll damage in cotton occurred at the interfaces or common boundaries of fields in corn-cotton and peanut-cotton farmscapes. Applying insecticides only in the stink bug infested egdes of a cotton field could help conserve natural enemies of stink bugs in the remainder of the field.
