A two year study was conducted to ascertain the effect of short term tillage systems on the growth and development of four cotton varieties in Virginia. The tillage systems used were no surface tillage, chisel plow plus land conditioning, strip-tillage, and under-the-row subsoil tillage only. The varieties chosen for the study were Deltapine 1028 and 1321, Phytogen 499, and Fibermax 1944. The objectives of the study were 1) to determine if tillage systems affect establishment and early season growth of cotton and 2) to determine if tillage systems affects cotton varieties different with regard to earliness and lint yield.
