Program Advances in the Eradication of Pink Bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella in Arizona Cotton

Larry Antilla and Leighton Liesner. Arizona Cotton Research & Protection Council, 3721 E. Wier Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85040-2933

Significant progress has been made in the second year of a program to eradicate pink bollworm from Arizona cotton.  High levels of Bt cotton, uniform pheromone treatments on non-Bt cotton, and sterile insect technology over all plantings have dramatically reduced pink bollworm adult and larval populations.  Heavy, late season migratory pressure from western cotton growing areas outside the program do, however, seriously jeopardize progress made in current eradication zones.  Expansion into these areas is critical for 2008.
