Measurement of Naturally Colored Cotton by Different Testing Methods

Malgorzata Matusiak, Textile Research Institute, 5/15 Brzezinska str., 276 Piotrkowska str., Lodz, 92-103, Poland

Naturally colored cotton enables to eliminate the dyeing process of textiles and at the same time limitation of the danger to human health caused by the dyestuffs. An additional advantage of naturally colored cotton is that its cultivation is ecological. Nevertheless, there are some limitations to increasing the use of colored cotton due to its properties. It is characterized by short fibers of lower tenacity in comparison to white medium staple cottons processed commonly in spinning mills The aim of work was to analyze the basic quality properties of naturally colored cotton: brown and green of different origin: Greek, Turkish and Brazilian. For measurement different testing methods and devices were applied: AFIS, HVI, MDTA, spectrophotometer, microscope in the polarized light, etc.
